FALL FASHIONS IN SPRING
NEW YORK FASHION WEEK / 2009
On the week of Feb 13-20 2009, the fashion world
set its collective gaze upon New York City as the fashion capital of
the world. In the Moda Industry, there are four major capitals… New
York, Paris, London and Milan, and twice a year these grand cities host
the much celebrated, media circus known as ‘Fashion Week’.
Fashion Weeks are semi-annual Moda Events which showcase some of the newest, classiest and trendiest fashions by the brightest and most respected fashion houses and designers in the world. These shows allow the industry to know what’s “IN” and what’s “OUT”. These events also serve another purpose… they permit the press and buyers a chance to preview the upcoming fashion designs for the next season. The Fall Fashions are previewed from January - March and the Spring Collections from September - November.
In New York, Fashion Week is currently held in Bryant Park, however beginning in 2010 Damrosch Park will be the stage for all future New York Moda previews. New York Fashion Week was originally titled “Press Week”. In 1943, when America was involved in a world war, the press and members of the fashion industry had no access to the premier fashion designers in Paris, so a fashion publicist by the name of Eleanor Lambert organized the first gathering of fashion designers in this country, thus “Press Week” was born and now the world simply knows this event as “New York Fashion Week”.
NEW YORK 2009 Fall / Winter Fashion Trends
In viewing the Fall/Winter collections for the 2009 Season, several fashion trends began to emerge. First of all (for better or worse) the shoulder pad is back… and I mean BACK! Just about every major fashion designer featured some variation of shoulder padding on their designs. Marc Jacobs, Donna Karen, Alexander Wang, Max Azria, Diane Von Furstenberg and countless other designers were co-conspirators to this “Mad Pad” insurrection.
If you happen to be an animal lover, then this Fall Fashion season is for you. A surprising trend featured in the 2009 Fall Fashion week, was the return of the “Animal Print” once thought of as being extinct in the fashion world, these animals are thriving quite nicely as featured in the 2009 Fall Fashion Week shows in Bryant Park New York.
Shine, sheen, shimmer and just for fun… “more shine” was the Moda call of the week in this year’s New York Fashion Week designs. The glare was everywhere, (I love it!) giving the current fall fashion “shimmer status”. I have a feeling this is a great time to invest in sunglass stock. Among the noted fashion designers featuring the “sheen look” are Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Christian Siriano and Ralph Lauren.
Besides all of the above mentioned fashion trends coming this fall, we will also be seeing lots of leather, power suits, second skin dresses, and dark lipstick.
Best of Show
Ralph Lauren… he never ceases to amaze. His entire Fall collection blended together perfectly from start to finish. Beginning with grey designs and silver sheen gowns (yes even more sheen… but simply put, Mr. Lauren does it better) to the off white multi-layered gowns, his 2009 Fall collection was an impressive orchestration of fashion designs onto the runway. In NY Fashion Week, the level of design and the quality of the pieces have to be of the highest magnitude in order to make an impression and Mr. Lauren’s Fall collection certainly does impress.
Just as important as the quality of the designs, is the order of the collections presentation. When we go to a symphony, the music builds up with one precious note at a time until it reaches a crescendo. On the runway, this rule also applies with one collection piece surpassing the previous one and the next one exceeding it, until the audience reaches a visual climax. This “veil detail” is something that can make or break even the grandest of fashion collections. It is a basic element of showmanship that sometimes looses flavor with even the most experienced of fashion designers.
Honorable mention Diesel Black Gold (I love Rock Star Attires).
Blah and the Blasé in New York
And now… for my most disappointing fashion designer of the 2009 New York Fall Fashion Week, Michael Kors. I found his collection to be totally uninspired. Mr. Kors, you can‘t keep re-inventing the wheel. His Fall designs lacked any creativity and his presentation had no continuity whatsoever. Bouncing from a basic grey 40’s era dress to modern era neon designs all within one collection? Michael, the fashion community holds you in such high regard… we have come to expect nothing but an elevated degree of inspirational designs from you. Michael Kors, you’re just going to have to quit emailing your fashion designs from the set of ‘Project Runway’.
Dishonorable mention Tommy Hilfiger
Fashion houses and designers worth noting are Anna Sui, Miss Sixty, G Star and Libertine. Imagine this… if Pee Wee Herman had a girlfriend, she would be wearing Libertine Fashions.
On the next Veil Moda segment we come closer to home with interviews with local fashion designers and we will see what the Fashion community is doing and buying in these hard economic times , till then Elmo Fashion Editor stash Magazine
